National Sports Festival: Team FCT gets FCTA strong backing

Mar, 2021 | By Gyang Dakwo and Dominic Idio | ||

Chances of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) contingent to the National Sports Festival (NSF) in Edo state received further boost with the assurance by FCT Administration (FCTA) that no stone will be left unturned to ensure the team puts in its best performance at the games. The sports fiesta is billed for 2-15 April this year. During a visit to the athletes' camp at Area 10 Sports Complex, Permanent Secretary, FCTA, Mr. Olusade Adesola, assured that the Administration will give its full support to the athletes and Team FCT to ensure that they excel in Edo state.

But he called for all activities in the build-up to the festival to be taken seriously by all stakeholders so that Team FCT will be better positioned to put up a good outing. The Permanent Secretary said: "I have the privilege of being in (Federal Ministry of) Youth and Sports before. So I am not a stranger to what sporting activities demand and I want to assure you that we will support you, we are with you all the way.

"It is a business and we are partners. So go for Edo 2020, go for gold. I want you to have it in mind, make it your slogan that in Edo you will not be a spectator. You are not the only ones preparing. "When you are going to war, you only know your own strength but you do not know the strength of the opponent. Some teams have been preparing for long despite Covid-19 disruptions; so you have no time to waste, therefore you must be prepared." The Permanent Secretary, who charged the FCT sports management to constantly engage in sporting activities that will help develop talent, advised the athletes to discipline themselves and take advantage of the opportunities that will be open to them through sports.

He counseled: "We should not wait for competitions before we gather people to train them. We should be engaging in competitions. Sport is business. You know the storyline of many of your colleagues that are making it: you keep trying. What I know is that if that person can get there, anything preventing me? It is just hard work. So in your chosen field, please be committed." Speaking at the event, Acting Secretary, Social Development Secretariat, Dr. Kelvin Ike, whose Secretariat supervises sports, expressed optimism that with the support being given by FCTA, Team FCT will do its best to make the Territory proud.

"The coming of the Permanent Secretary here is a sign that we are going to have a single-digit win this year. We will not disappoint the sports-loving Permanent Secretary, the Minister of State, FCT, and the Honorable Minister of FCT. We will do all our best in order to come back with laurels that befit the status of FCT." In his remarks, Acting Director, FCT Sports Department, Mr. Luka Istifanus, disclosed that Team FCT will participate in 27 sports at the Edo Games, adding that although the team has some sports it considers its stronghold, it will put up a strong fight for medals in all sports.

"Of course, our stronghold includes karate, athletics, football, handball, judo, kung-fu, kick boxing, wrestling. Those are our stronghold, but with the turnaround that we have made in preparation for this festival, I want to believe that those that did not win in the previous editions will definitely win something this time around," he stated. The last edition of the sports fiesta in 2018 was hosted by FCT which emerged overall 7th among the 36 states on the medals table.
