FCT Sports Dept plans Area Council Games

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Sports Department is to commence talent hunt at the grassroots by instituting Area Council Games in the Territory. The move will also enable the Department unearth and select proficient athletes who can bring credit to FCT. This was disclosed in a statement made available to newsmen last week by Head, Public Relations Unit of the Department, Mrs. Vivian Uttah Onubogu.

The spokesperson quoted the Acting Director, FCT Sports Department, Mr. Luka Istifanus, as saying that the proposed games will commence in last quarter of this year. Onubogu revealed further that athletes from the six Area Councils of FCT are expected to converge on the Sports Complex, Old Parade Ground, Area 3, Garki, for the sports fiesta.

The statement added: ''The FCT Sports Department has 27 active sports but priority will be given to team sports of football, volleyball, basketball, handball, hockey. Few individual sports will be selected in karate, judo, wrestling and boxing during the competition. "Talents will be sourced from community-based sporting programmes and institutional-based sporting programmes. These talents will be nurtured for higher performances.''

He explained that recent findings revealed that 400 foul water manhole covers, 582 storm water covers and 23,210 gully pot covers were vandalized in the territory.
