The Gender Department of the FCT Social Development Secretariat today arrested and subsequently handed over to the Police one Mrs. Chioma Onyema. The mother of two and a business woman abused and assaulted a Miss Chinyere Chukwuka, her 12-yearold cousin and house help. The secretariat which acted swiftly upon a call from a whistle blower neighbor, narrated in detail the level of assault of Chinyere such that her situation required urgent intervention.

When the SDS team caught up with the family and the child, it was discovered that the child's entire body contained lacerations, wounds of different categories and some deep cuts as a result of constant assault. It was a gory and painful sight to behold. Some of the wounds were fresh and recent while were healing and others had healed. No part of little Chinreye's body was spared from violation and assault. When we sought to inquire from her aunty, Mrs. Chioma why such degree of injuries was inflicted on a child, she had this to say, "Honestly, i was only trying to correct my cousin because she's wayward, with very terrible and questionable character. She used to insert her fingers in my two years old daughter's private part anytime she's asked to clean her bottom after defeacating."

The same behavior and many other terrible ones I can't begin to start mentioning were what made me to pick her up from the village. I have talked with her severally, I admonished , appealed and counselled her to no avail. It was just an attempt to enforce the correction on her that led me to flog her.. I think I may have over-reacted and was influenced by my emotions, I am deeply sorry, I regret my actions, please" Reacting on the development, the Ag. Secretary, SDS, Hajiya Safiya Umar reiterated the Administration's commitment to identify violations and those that assault and abuse the Child Rights Acts in the FCT and to ensure that the cause of justice is served on them accordingly. "We have informed the Police authorities who are on their way here to arrest Mrs. Chioma Onyema for thorough investigation after which she will be charged to court"

We wish to also use this medium to state that our searchlights is beamed fully on the nooks and crannies of every home, office, shop where any kind of violence, assault or abuse may occur. No hiding place for them, we shall catch up with them." Director of Gender, FCT, Mrs. Agnes Utah - Hart stated that they got an anonymous call from a concerned neighbor of the woman through the FCT Call Center and we were there almost immediately.

'The Child Rights Acts provides that in every action concerning a Child, the best interest of the Child should be the focus of consideration' The Acts recognizes the rights of children, builds their confidence and self esteem and improves their status. It enables children, including those with disabilities to enjoy their rights fully, as it provides special measures for their care and protection" She added that a child is a person under the age of 18years. Hence the victim in this circumstances is a child, the Secretariat will take will take custody of the child pending the determination of the case in court. In her assertion, the President, National Council of Women Society (NCWS), Hajia Hadiza Umar condemned the act and agreed that it was high time that one among the culprits of assault and violation of the rights of the child was made as a scapegoat to deter others in the future.
