Over 40,000 take COVID-19 vaccination in FCT

Apr, 2021 | By Wisdom Acka | ||

No fewer than 40,000 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) residents have received their first shot of the COVID-19 vaccines since the roll-out of the exercise in March. Acting Executive Secretary, FCT Primary Healthcare Board, Dr. Nda-Eyo Iwot made the disclosure while monitoring a public vaccination exercise at the residence of Senator Philip Aduda in Jabi. He added that the over 40,000 figure was part of the one million figure so far vaccinated nationwide.

Assuring residents of the safety of the COVID-19 AstraZeneca vaccine, Dr. Iwot urged residents to ignore conspiracy theories and fake news being pushed on social media, stressing that no known adverse effect of the vaccine has been recorded. He clarified that two of the five cases of adverse side effects being circulated on social media were not as being painted, adding that while one was actually found to be flu and fever, the other was not directly linked to the vaccine.

FCTA Permanent Secretary, Mr. Adesola Olusade, while commending the lawmakers for publicly taking the vaccine, stated that the move would not only boost public confidence in the exercise, but will also validate the efficacy and safety of the vaccine. The Permanent Secretary added that government would not make it compulsory for Nigerians to take the jab. He, however, explained that certain situations may necessitate taking the jab.

Speaking to journalists after taking the jab, Senator Aduda commended the efforts of the FCT Administration to curb the spread of the pandemic. He said that the decline in the number of positive cases in FCT was an indication that the Territory was getting it right. Aduda, who led other FCT lawmakers, Hon. Micha Jiba and Hon. Hassan Usman Sokodabo to take their jabs, said doing this will convince their supporters that the vaccine is safe "We members of the National Assembly, our families and domestic staff are here to be vaccinated. As a leader, I should be able to convince the people that this is safe."

News Update

He explained that recent findings revealed that 400 foul water manhole covers, 582 storm water covers and 23,210 gully pot covers were vandalized in the territory.
