Edo 2020: FCT athletes promise harvest of medals

10th Feb, 2020 | By Our Reporter | ||

The Unity Torch for the upcoming National Sports Festival, tagged Edo 2020, last week touched down in Abuja on its traditional nationwide tour which will terminate in the host city on the eve of the games. Consequently, apart from the fanfare which greeted the arrival of the Unity Torch, there was a mixed sense of expectancy and anxiety from sports enthusiasts especially from sports men and women themselves in the build-up and what is expected of them at the games.

Abuja Digest Weekly spoke with some members of Team FCT who are presently in camp on their level of preparedness for the games. Samuel Atebije (Head Coach, Athletics) : "For both the new athletes and those that participated in the last sports festival in Abuja, this is marking a new stage and we are fully prepared to go out to Edo and bring back medals. We have young upcoming athletes and even some who came in from the U.S. competing for the FCT.

"We have worked very hard and will continue to do so until the festival ends. I am confident that track and field will lift up the FCT on the medals table." Sunday Samuel (Head Coach, Tennis): "As usual, tennis is always ahead in preparations, we don't wait until the dying minute before we prepare. Immediately after the last sports festival, training commenced for the next one with open camp for players. "In tennis, we have a vibrant association which complements the efforts of the Sports Department in terms of logistics and equipment and this enables us to train always. So yes, we are ready for Edo 2020 and by the grace of God, we will get the medals."

Gloria Ibeh (Athlete, Track and Field): "First of all, I must give kudos to the FCT Sports Department for the commencement of preparations for the games immediately after the 2018 National Sports Festival in Abuja. "We are sure of medals in Edo because we have potentials in the sprint and quarter-mile. Our quartet for relay is going to have a good outing this time around. "Also I must commend our coaches for the good job they have been doing with regard to training and motivating us to push towards our goals." Sunday Emmanuel (Tennis Player): "As the National Sports Festival is very close, all we have to do is to put in our best in training and make sure we do everything possible to play well. We will surely do our best and we are prepared to win our games in Edo.

"Support from the sports administration has been good, but we will always call on them to do more so as to guarantee better results in all competitions." Gerald Odeka (Athlete, Track and Field): "For those of us who have trained hard and are prepared for the competition, the arrival of the Unity Torch has raised our hopes. "This is our own version of the Olympic Games where athletes have the opportunity to compete and showcase themselves. For the track and field, I think we have selected the best and hopefully we are going to get medals in both the individual and team events at Edo 2020."
