Jul, 2021 | By Ngozi Dike-Nkemjika and Emmanuella Akokote | ||

Determined to get more youths involved in Agricultural Technology, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Department of Science and Technology in partnership with Young Farmers Development Initiative (YDFI), a non-governmental organization (NGO, inaugurated Young Farmers Clubs in five science and technical schools under the purview of the department.

Speaking on the occasion, the department's Deputy Director in charge of popularization of science, Hajia Ramatu Habu, who led the inauguration team, said boosting students' interest in agriculture became essential not just to turn out self-reliant youths, but to contribute immensely in agricultural production and further diversification of nation's economy.

She called on students to make good use of every opportunity that the club activities provide to be above board in expanding agriculture through technological application. President of YFDI, Mr Chilota Onyeka, while givng insight into the purpose of the club's inauguration, said it is time for the youth to get more involved in agriculture as the nation awaits such.

He said YFDI has been in existence but needed to set up the clubs in school through which young farmers (students) will be trained in different methods of farming involving technological approach such as use of organic fertilizer, conversation of organic fish fields, off-ground farming and many others. In their response, principals of the schools unanimously agreed that the plan to train the students on Agricultural technology came at the right time when the country is in dire need of economic diversification.

They noted that the inauguration of YFC is a wake-up call to catch the youth young and imbibe in them the ideology of "feed yourself and others". Appreciating the department and YFDI, the principals emphasized that the move is in the best interest of the youth to learn "how to fish instead of being given fish." They promised to ensure that students learn a lot through the training, expand the clubs and turn out future agriculturists.

The five schools that benefited from the inaugurations were Government Science Secondary School, Pyakasa; Government Science and Technical College, Garki; Government Girls' Science Secondary School, Kuje; Government Science Secondary School, Abaji; and Government Science and Technical College, Kwali. Highpoint of the inauguration was the presentation of club inaugural certificates by the president of YFDI to mark the commencement of the clubs.
