TThe Nigeria Police Force has been commended for promoting weightlifting by organizing the Inspector General of Police Weightlifting Championship which took place in Abuja recently. Federal Capital Territory weightlifting coach, Janet Ali made the commendation at the end of the championship where five athletes represented the FCT, winning a total of 9 Gold, 3 Silver and 1 Bronze medals. In a statement made available to Abuja Digest Weekly by the Head, Media and Communications Unit, FCT Sports Department, Vivian Onubogu, Ali appreciated the Inspector General of Police for organizing the competition that has enabled weightlifters to showcase their skills in weightlifting. According to her, weightlifters have been redundant, because there has not been any Weightlifting Championship organized for the athletes to put their training to test. The coach said she looking forward for more weightlifting Championship to be organized so the athletes can display their prowess, adding that talent hunt remains high on the list of priorities while getting training equipment has been a source of worry. Meanwhile the department's Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation of Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE) has held an election for officials that will run its affairs. The statement disclosed that Mary God's-Power who emerged as the new Chairman of the Union pledged her commitment towards her assignment, adding that staff training and overall welfare will be given the topmost priority.
