FCT gymnasts coming out stronger with 13 medals

Nov, 2021 | By Gyang Dakwo and Ahmad Adam | ||

FCT gymnastics team has maintained its position as a force to be reckoned with by putting up an unprecedented performance to win 13 medals, placing second behind Delta state on the gymnastics medal table at the just-concluded 6th National Youth Games in Ilorin. The youngsters, who were among the youngest competitors at the tourney, proudly held their ground and overcame stiff challenges to emerge as best youth gymnastics team (female) and third best youth gymnastics team (male).

One of the household names in gymnastics, 13-year-old Munachi Obiefuna, who came second all-round best in 2019, won first position this year with 3 gold and 1 silver. She was followed by 8-year-old Gift Torhile who emerged second with 2 gold and 1 silver. In the male category, Samson Torhile emerged second all-round best with 1 gold, 2 silver and a bronze in team event. Other medal winners include Safiya Mshelia, 1 bronze, and Ene Apochi, 1 silver.

Speaking to Abuja Digest Weekly, the team coach Noel Sati Egbunu, who expressed delight over the feats, said the feeling of satisfaction and pride after winning is what provides the driving force to strive towards loftier heights. Egbunu said: “I feel fulfilled as my entire efforts yielded positive result and seeing those bright and beautiful smiles on the gymnasts' faces after the victory is encouraging me to push them to the top the more. My plan is to push them to compete on the highest stage, which is the Olympics, and so far we are already getting there.”

He described his star gymnast Obiefuna, who won two silver and a bronze medal at the 2020 National Sports Festival, as “consistent, resilient, committed and above all, awesome.” The coach said the determination to succeed came from the gymnasts as well as their parents and guardians who always served as a major partner in helping to develop the talents in the young athletes.

“The motivation is the encouragement and support we get from the parents of the gymnasts and the gymnasts' willingness to master old skill beyond learning and to learn new skills,” Egbunu remarked.
