FCT Minister okays N1.26bn pension payment for 317 retirees

Apr, 2021 | By Lydia Fulani | ||

Smiles returned to the faces of 317 retired staff and families of deceased ones following the approval by Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, of the payment of a princely sum of N1.26 billion for them. The approval is for Accrued Rights Benefit to the affected staff members who retired from Secretariats, Departments and Agencies of FCT Administration (FCTA).

These were disclosed to Abuja Digest Weekly by Director, FCT Pension Department, Mrs. Elizabeth Okoli during a chat in her office. Accrued Right Benefit is paid to staff who were in service before the Pension Reform Act 2004 which birthed the current Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS). Mrs. Okoli disclosed that sequel to the release of fund into the Retirement Savings Account (RSA) of the beneficiaries, the Department had issued clearance letters to the retirees and next of kin of deceased staff to enable them access the retirement benefits from their Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs).

She revealed that the Department was currently processing another batch of Accrued Right Benefit and appealed to retirees yet to complete pension documentation with the department to endeavor to do so immediately. The Director frowned at attempts by strange elements to scam some retirees saying the latter complained that they had been receiving unsolicited phone calls from unscrupulous members of the public requesting for money to facilitate the processing of their retirement benefits in the Department. She, therefore, cautioned retirees to beware of such fraudulent calls as the FCT Pension Department ''does not collect money to process retirement benefits.''

Mrs. Okoli enjoined retirees to contact the department on telephone number 08183775313 for enquiries on all pension- related matters. Dwelling on other issues, the Director explained that in line with the mandate of the department to enlighten FCTA staff on the operation of the CPS, it commenced sensitization programmes on the RSA Transfer System with the aim of ensuring staff are well informed on the modalities for the process.

The RSA Transfer System was launched by National Pension Commission (PENCOM) on 16 November, 2020. Mrs. Okoli revealed that the sensitization programme which began with Pension Desk Officers (PDOs), Heads of Administration and Salary Officers of SDAs and FCTA self- funded agencies as well as PDOs of FCTA Junior Secondary Schools, will be expanded to cover other FCTA staff in due course.
