Independence Day: Senate President Lawan reiterates commitment of 9th NASS to nation building

7th Oct, 2019 | By Sennen Udoh | ||

President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, has assured Nigerians that the 9th National Assembly under his leadership will "provide legislative support for every idea and initiative geared towards making Nigeria our pride and homeland." He took the position in a press statement he issued last week on the occasion of Nigeria's 59th Independence Day anniversary.

Senator Lawan is also Chairman of the National Assembly. In a 10-paragraph message entitled: 'Independence Anniversary: Nigeria's Challenges, Stepping stone to greatness', the Senate President recalled the sacrifices made by the founding fathers of the nation"in their brave struggle that ended colonialism on our shores 59 years ago" and called on Nigerians "never to lose sight of our God-given potentials and we must be prepared to do our part in realizing Nigeria's greatness."

An allusion to Nigeria's greatness came with a challenge and admonition for the citizenry to wear the garb of utmost patriotism, courage and hard work. His words: "For this generation of Nigerians, we must not waver or be discouraged by the challenges of nation building." Like a Philosophy teacher seeking to establish the nexus between a long-term goal and a proactive national objective, he quipped logically: "The current challenge that Nigeria is going through is definitely not insurmountable and should be seen as a necessary process towards the attainment of greatness."

The Senate Chief Executive identified attributes of greatness as "creativity, resilience, hard work and the eagle spirit" which he charged Nigerians to tap; pointing out that by so doing "we shall surely ride the storms of these challenges to reach the height that we desire." …Deputy Senate President Omo-Agege tasks Nigerians on unity, Next Level Agenda In a related development, Deputy Senate President Senator Omo-Agege has charged Nigerians to root for indissoluble unity, peace and an undaunting spirit in pursuit of the lofty dreams of the nation's founding fathers.

In a six-paragraph statement issued by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Mr. Yomi Odunuga, tagged: 'Nigeria at 59: Omo-Agege greets Nigerians, calls for oneness', the Deputy Senate President stressed the need for oneness and accommodation, emphasizing that with determination the country would surmount its present challenges and emerge stronger. Acknowledging the founding legacies of the compatriots whose sacrifices collectively kept the nation relatively stable in the mainstream of nation-building, he stated: "I salute all our heroes past and present, especially our teachers, farmers, public servants and all those security and law enforcement agents whose diligent service means a lot to the current and future generations."

The Deputy Senate President who has arguably demonstrated consistently in terms of positive advocacy for the Next Level Agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari's Administration, concluded: "As we celebrate this occasion, I implore all citizens to renew our commitment towards building a great Nigeria by joining hands with government to take our great nation to the Next Level."
