FCT Archives, Karu Chiefdom partner on relics and heritage protection

1st Jul, 2019 | By Karo Sani Bala | ||

Karu Chiefdom in Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is set to work with FCT Achieves and History Bureau in a bid to protect heritage and relics of the monarchy from deterioration and ruin. Receiving the management of the bureau led by its Director, Ms. Cerie Jogai, in his palace, the Sakaruyi of Karu, HRH Emmanuel Kyauta Yepwi said the chiefdom dates back to Keffi Emirate of the old Plateau State and before the creation of FCT.

According to him, the chiefdom is a repository of history, saying "we inherited historical sites and valuable documents worthy of attracting tourists and researchers." The Sakaruyi also stated that his interest in heritage protection was stimulated by factors such as his personal visits to the National Archives in Kaduna and some historical bureaux across the nation, particularly in Katsina State, but the most striking was the FCT Archives and History Bureau symposium he had the opportunity to attend recently.

Commending the Director for her progressive initiatives, he equally urged the bureau to assist the chiefdom in establishment of its own archives and museum as well as identification of historical sites to save them from poaching and ruin. Speaking earlier, Ms. Jogai had said that the team was in the palace on the royal invitation of the monarch and appreciated the Sakaruyi for honouring the bureau's invitation to be royal father of the day during the international Archives Day symposium and open house held recently.

She also seized the opportunity to shed more light on the statutory responsibilities of the bureau as the institutional memory of FCT Administration (FCTA) and offered to know the areas the bureau could assist the chiefdom in the area of historical documentation. Responding to the chiefdom's quest to set up own archive, she described the idea as laudable. For the benefit of students, researchers, and tourists, she, however, maintained that the bureau would still need copies of documents from the chiefdom for the benefit of the general public, citing as example the gesture of Zuba Chiefdom that shared some historical documents with FCT Archives.

The Director further assured of the bureau's readiness to work with the chiefdom on modalities of documenting the history of Karu entity. In a vote of thanks on behalf of the management team, the bureau's Director, Administration and Finance, Alhaji Ishaq Abubakar Sadeeq, stated that "we are delighted to collaborate with the chiefdom and I want to assure that the bureau we meet your expectation." He thanked the royal father for his support during the last event. Highlights of the visit include presentation of appreciation letter, lecture paper and pictures of the symposium as well as interactive session with title holders of the palace.
