Edu Sec, UNICEF partner stakeholders to validate operational document

In order to ensure adequate planning,implementation and development of the Education Sector Strategic and Operational Plans at the Federal Capital Territory ( FCT ) level,the Department of Policy, Planning , Research and Statistics of the FCT Education Secretariat has brought together the six Area Councils in the FCT to present their Local Education Sector and Operational Plans (LESOP) to stakeholders for further consultation and validation.

Speaking during the 3 days stakeholders meeting supported by United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), the Director of the Department, Dr Sani Mohammed Ladan said the objective of the meeting was to interface stakeholders for necessary imputs on the documents and to look at the data used in terms of baselines and target while ensuring the Local Education Authority level active involvement in the LESOP document.

He stated that the expected outcome among others was to ensure the stakeholders consultation and ownership of the document and validation for proper implementation in the FCT. Dr. Ladan also noted that the responsibilities of providing basic quality education lies on the Local Education Authority.

He observed that over the years, UNICEF has supported the development of the Education Sector Strategic and Operational Plans at the state level involving thirty states including the Federal Capital Territory, adding that the process has strengthened both institutional and individual capacity at Local level.

He solicited for adequate funding for the department to enable it carry out the expected mandate of in-depth and adequate planning and research as well as correct collection of data as applicable. In their various submissions, the two resource persons, Dr Gladys Makoju and Barrister Ego Okechukwu said the planning development process is strategic and aimed at bringing planning and implementation of education sector activities and tasks down to the grass root level.

They commended the Six Area Councils' technical committees for their commitments which involved intensive training , data collection of number of teachers, students , infrastructure both in quantitative and qualitative aspects as well as creating conducive learning environment among others stressing on the proper implementation of the LESOP document for the benefit of the students and the society.

The Directors of School Services of the FCT Secondary Education Board (SEB) and Special Needs, Dr Sunday Idakwoji and Dr Ene Fransisca said that secondary education is vital to effecting the plan document while putting into consideration special needs persons into the LESOP plan in order to bridge the gap. In his final remarks, the Director of Administration and Finance,Education Secretariat, Mallam Umar Marafa called on all the FCT stakeholders to key into the new LESOP to improve education at the local levels adding that the document will guide the service delivery of quality education in FCT.

The Director commended UNICEF for its continuous support in the education sector assuring that the planning process and implementation will add value to the students and schools. The well attended 3 day Stakeholders meeting in the FCT plan has three components of Early ChildCare Development Education (ECCDE) , Primary and Nomadic Education .

The Minister said these after a meeting of the FCT Security Committee which comprises heads of the police, military and para-military formations in FCT as well as Area Council Chairmen and religious leaders.

The cheery news is coming as Minister of State, FCT, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu will headline a distinguished galaxy of stakeholders for the FCT pension stakeholders retreat this week.

Finally last week, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) took over managing and operating the newly- completed Nigeria-Korea Model School in Abuja.
