FCT has capacity to produce adequate cotton for ginneries - NACOTAN Chairman

Feb, 2021 | By Nkechi Isa | ||

The Chairman, National Cotton Association of Nigeria (NACOTAN), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, Mr Isah Musa recently disclosed that the FCT has a comparative advantage on cotton production as it adequately produces cotton for the nation's gunneries. Musa explained this in Kwali recently adding that youths and farmers in the FCT embraced and participated in cotton production in 2020 under the Central Bank of Nigeria Anchor Borrowers Program.

According to him, the program is laudable as the CBN provides the farmers with a single digit loan facility, inputs, pesticides, tractorization, fertilizer and a ready market for their produce. He however lamented that the bumper harvest expected in Kwali Area Council in 2020 was marred by late provision of inputs and poor rainfall. The NACOTAN chairman expressed hope that this year's farming season will be better as the farmers were better sensitized on cotton farming. He stated that cotton producers in other parts of the Territory were smiling to the bank following a bumper harvest from the improved seedlings provided by the CBN and a ready market for their produce.

Similarly, the MD/CEO NACOTAN, Mr Anibe Achimugu has said that cotton production would help revive the moribund textile factories in the country . Mr Achimugu noted that the textile industry was once one of the highest employers of labour in the country. He informed that Nigeria was on its way to recovering the glory days of cotton production following the CBN intervention through the Anchor Borrowers Program and Executive Order 003 signed by President Muhammadu Buhari mandating uniformed personnel to source materials for their uniforms from Nigerian textiles.The MD NACOTAN urged stakeholders in the cotton production value chain to put in their best to achieve the desired objectives.
