Sep, 2021 | By Gyang Dakwo and Kudirat Adamu | ||

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has picked two qualification tickets in beach volleyball (male and female) at North-Central Zonal Elimination Competition in Ilorin ahead of the 2021 National Youth Games (NYG). A total of 648 athletes from FCT and five states in the North-Central zone participated in the elimination tourney.

The states are Kwara, Benue, Nasarawa, Niger and Plateau, while Kogi did not participate in the qualifiers. Host Kwara won the tickets for cricket (male and female), football (male and female), volleyball (male) and rugby (male and female). The final results signed by the Zonal Coordinator, North-Central, Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Pitmang Deborah, showed that Benue picked four tickets in female basketball, handball, hockey and volleyball.

Niger won the male basketball and handball, while Nasarawa state won one ticket, in male hockey. Meanwhile, the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has warned against age cheating, false claims of disability and other sharp practices, vowing to sanction any state found to be culpable. The Director of Grassroots Sports Development in the Ministry, Bode Durotoye, stated that the 2021 Youth Games has been going on as scheduled in the timeline. He revealed that the Zonal Elimination for eight team sports has just been concluded in the six geo-political zones in the country.

Durotoye said there will be sanctions against states and athletes that falsify age, engage in the use of performance-enhancing substances and misrepresent the disability status of special athletes, among others. The National Youth Games is scheduled to hold from 10-19 October in Ilorin, Kwara state. All the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory are expected to participate in the annual sporting event, which is an avenue for discovering young talents.

News Update

Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed, disclosed these while speaking during the FMFBNP/AfDB SAPZ High-Level virtual discussions last week.

With the support of her principals, Dame Joy Okoro has gradually been solving the many issues that plagued FCT Water Board with the immediate noticeable result being that revenue has shot up apparently for the first time in a while.

In a recent interview with Abuja Digest Weekly's Sennen Udoh, Mr. Ekpenyong, was a journalist's delight to behold as he volunteered consultancy counseling on effective mentoring on education, moral upbringing, and sports/other talents.

The involvement of women in sports in Nigeria in some quarters, particularly in northern Nigeria, is something that is viewed as rather unacceptable but a different ball game in other parts of the country.
