Day-old baby rescued from public latrine in Kwali has a destiny to fulfill - Ag. Director, Gender Department

May, 2021 | By Darlington Omotoso | ||

The Acting Director, Gender Department, of the Federal Capital Territory Administration'(FCTA), Social Development Secretariat (SDS), Mrs. Asabe Umar Precious has said that the recently rescued infant, a day-old boy, saved from a pit toilet in Kwali Area Council of the FCT, has a destiny to fulfill. She said this during an exclusive chat with Abuja Digest Weekly in her office in Abuja recently.

"The mere fact that he survived in a very terrible environment where he was abandoned to die, probably by his mother, is an indication that the child is destined to be great," she said. Narrating how she got to know about the rescued child, the Ag. Director said, "I got a message from Dr. Jummai Ahmadu, Ag. Director, FCT Administration's Reform Coordination and Service Improvement Department, stating that the Police Divisional Headquarters in Kwali had recently rescued an abandoned one day old baby from a pit toilet in Bako, Kwali Area Council.

The baby was discovered by one Patience Bitrus, a female resident of Bako, as she went to answer the call of nature and heard the tender cries of the new born baby from the pit toilet. Luckily, the baby was rescued alive and was taken to Wisdom Clinic in Kwali Area Council for immediate medical attention before contacting the Department of Social Welfare, Kwali Area Council for necessary action as police has intensified effort to identify the mother of the abandoned baby with a view to bringing her to book. The baby is safely in the custody of Treasured Orphanage and Homes, Kwali, one of the homes registered with the Gender Department.

"The Honourable Minister of State, FCT, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, is aware of the situation and immediately directed the FCT Area Council Services Secretariat to invite Kwali Area Council Chairman for a meeting on the matter of the child. She is indeed the mother of all orphans, abandoned and vulnerable children in the FCT, whilst the Honourable Minister, FCT, Mallam Mohammed Musa Bello is their father. I am reliably aware that Kwali Area Council Chairman, Honourable Danladi Chiya, is yet to report for the meeting because he was recently bereaved," she concluded.

This is the second time in about two months, that abandoned babies have been rescued from certain death by good hearted residents of the FCT. The Police is still investigating the case of a young lady in Bwari Area Council who dug a shallow grave and buried her new born son, leaving him to die. When the baby was discovered by two gentlemen, he was rescued and immediately taken to Maitama District Hospital. Luckily he survived and the mother was apprehended by the Police after diligent investigation.

She claimed that poverty drove her to the point of burying her son alive since she was abandoned by the first man who got her pregnant for her first daughter whom she is taking care of singlehandedly. The second man who got her pregnant for the boy left her in a similar condition, thereby forcing her to attempt to end the boy's life. She is still in Police custody.

News Update

Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed, disclosed these while speaking during the FMFBNP/AfDB SAPZ High-Level virtual discussions last week.

With the support of her principals, Dame Joy Okoro has gradually been solving the many issues that plagued FCT Water Board with the immediate noticeable result being that revenue has shot up apparently for the first time in a while.

In a recent interview with Abuja Digest Weekly's Sennen Udoh, Mr. Ekpenyong, was a journalist's delight to behold as he volunteered consultancy counseling on effective mentoring on education, moral upbringing, and sports/other talents.

The involvement of women in sports in Nigeria in some quarters, particularly in northern Nigeria, is something that is viewed as rather unacceptable but a different ball game in other parts of the country.
