Combating Nigeria's security challenges remains President Buhari's top priority - FCT Minister

27th Jan, 2020 | By Tony Odey | ||

Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Malam Muhammad Musa Bello has affirmed that addressing the current security menace confronting the nation has undoubtedly remained President Muhammad Buhari's top goal right from the inception of the present Administration. The Minister made the remark during a two-day inter-security agencies' synergy workshop organized by Ministry of Defence which held at Sheraton Hotels and Towers, Abuja.

He said: "It would be recalled that right from its inception in May, 2015, the current Administration identified the resolution of the nation's security challenges as a core priority. It is gratifying that it remained resolute in this regard." Represented by FCT Permanent Secretary, Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa, Malam Bello said the workshop aptly captured the Administration's agenda geared towards repositioning and strengthening the country's holistic security architecture.

His words: "The workshop certainly fits into the broader agenda of government towards repositioning and strengthening the nation's entire defence and security architecture and enabling the country adequately cope with all prevailing and emergent security challenges." The Minister further remarked that inter-agency collaboration remains cardinal for effective management of the nation's security architecture. He said: "Unarguably, inter-agency synergy will continue to be an imperative for effective management of a nation's defence and security and Nigeria's case will not be an exception.''

Malam Bello called on participants to actively participate in the workshop and make purposeful and open contributions on all crucial matters. "I urge you all to participate actively at this workshop and contribute frankly to ensure robust and exhaustive consideration of all relevant issues," he remarked. Also speaking, Senate President Ahmed Lawan noted that the workshop is ''very germane'' given the fact that security has continued to dominate national discourse in recent time. Represented by Senate Vice Committee Chairman on Air Force, Senator Mike Nnaji,the Senate President maintained that crime is obviously dynamic, hence the need for robust synergy among security agencies.

According to him, when synergy is maintained among security agencies, information can be shared and ideas cross-fertilized resulting in effective management of security challenges. Minister of Interior Mr. Rauf Aregbesola explained that for effective containment of security challenges, leadership collaboration and management of resources are key. Earlier, in his welcome address, Minister of Defence, Major General Bashir Salihu Magashi described the workshop as ''very crucial'' as it will review inter-agency collaboration in a bid to address the security challenges bedeviling the country.

The Minister further maintained that the workshop will ensure re-alignment of security agencies with the aim of combating contemporary challenges. According to him, the workshop will also ensure the establishment of contact point for quick response, when necessary.
