FCTA flags off sensitization to end sexual violence

FCT Minister of State, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu has commended the FCT Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Response team members for taking bold and concrete steps to end all forms of gender-related violence, abuses and to protect survivors of the scourge in the FCT.

She maintained that the FCT maintained zero tolerance to all forms of abuse, violence and gender infringements. In her words, "FCT is and remains zero tolerant to all forms of sexual and gender violence, abuse, rape and harassment. The practice is not only despicable but also reprehensible, it is a great violation of humanity and a breach of the sanctity of the fundamental rights of the individual "

Dr. Tijjani, speaking during the flag off rally to increase awareness and sensitization towards ending all known forms of gender-based violence in the FCT promised that the FCT Administration will work with relevant partners and stakeholders to stem and eliminate the menace in the FCT. In her opening remarks, the Alternate Chairman of the FCT Response Team/Ag. Secretary, SDS, Hajia (Dr.) Safiya Umar, representing the Director, FCT Gender Department, Agnes Utah-Harts, stated that the upsurge in cases of sexual abuse, assaults, violations, intimidation in the FCT have in recent times assumed unprecedented heights even by trusted family members, members of same communities, religion leaders, teachers, etc .

The above development, she noted, berthed the collaboration between the Office of the Vice President and the Federal Capital Territory Administration to establish the FCT Sexual and Gender Based Violence Response Team (SGBVRT) to tackle and nip in the bud its menace in the FCT. Mrs. Hart, on behalf of the Response Team requested from the Hon. Minister, "the establishment of special courts for the adjudication of sexual offences in the FCT for quick and speedy dispensation of justice for survivors, particularly the establishment of Sexual Assault Referral Centres where survivors can access forensic examination and fast-track the process of obtaining evidence and tendering same in courts.

She commended the Hon. Minister of State for taking out time off her busy schedules to participate and flag off the awareness and sensitization rally. The walk which took off from the entrance to the FCT Minister's Office terminated at the FCT Sexual and Gender based violence Response Team located at 2nd Floor, Right Wing of the Social Development Secretariat, Cyprian Ekwensi Centre for Arts and Culture, Garki Area 10, Abuja. In attendance at the rally/walk were representatives from various MDAs, NGOs, the diplomatic community and law enforcement agencies.

The Minister said this during the presentation of FCT 2020 statutory budget to the joint sitting of the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on the FCT.

To ensure strict compliance with the Abuja Master Plan and permanently tackle traffic situation within Gwarinpa the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) said it would remove no fewer than 850 makeshift shops/houses (popularly called 'batchers') and shanties along the N16 road.

Speaking to journalists last week during commencement of sitting of a mobile court at the head office of Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), popularly called Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), in Mabushi, Abuja, authorities of the organization defended the establishment of the court saying it was set up by FCTA to decide the fate of traffic offenders.

Ahead of the planned revocation of plots of land situated in serviced areas of Federal Capital City (FCC), the FCT Administration (FCTA) has inaugurated a task team to holistically verify all identified undeveloped plots of land where infrastructure has already been provided.

Malam Bello made the pledge when he received a delegation of the FCT Sharia Court of Appeal led by the Grand Khadi, Justice Ibrahim Rufa'i Imam who was on a courtesy visit to FCTA.

Minister of State, FCT, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, made the clarion call and promised to reward such corps members who distinguish themselves during the one-year mandatory service..
