Preparations are in full swing as Team FCT sets its sights on a top spot at the 22nd National Sports Festival, also known as Gateway Games 2024, scheduled to take place in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.

Speaking with Abuja Digest, the Director of FCT Sports Department, Mr. Luka Istifanus, shared his optimism and excitement about the team’s readiness. He said training has been stepped up to ensure that the athletes represent the Federal Capital Territory with pride.

“We started preparing gradually, and now we are fully ready for Abeokuta 2024,” he said. “I am very hopeful that our athletes will make us proud at the Festival.”

At the last National Sports Festival, which took place in Delta State, Team FCT finished in ninth place. This year, they are aiming even higher — targeting a fifth, sixth, or seventh place finish. Mr. Istifanus believes that winning the overall title is not out of reach, but the focus remains on breaking into the top seven.

He listed gymnastics, karate, taekwondo, kung fu, athletics, and football as key medal prospects, but stressed that all sports are being treated as potential medal winners.

“We have trained with purpose. Even those sports that did not do well in the past can bring surprises this time,” he said. He praised the mix of experienced athletes and rising stars, adding that their determination is strong.

Mr. Istifanus also thanked the FCT Administration for their continued support, especially in the area of athlete welfare. He described the current leadership as “sports-loving” and said the support from the Minister and Minister of State has made a big difference.

“Looking at the kind of support, funding, and attention we are receiving, I can say with confidence that we will do better than we did in Delta State,” he said.

With camping ahead and training being intensified, the athletes are said to be in high spirits. The Director expressed deep personal commitment to the upcoming games, noting that this will be his last sports festival as FCT’s Director of Sports.

“This festival is special to me. I want us to achieve a position that FCT has never reached before,” he said.

He also praised the dedication of the coaches and athletes, saying their hard work and team spirit will be key to FCT’s success at the festival.
