Bello, Aliyu receive Unity Torch, assure on priority for sports

10th Feb, 2020 | By Gyang Dakwo | ||

Sports development in Federal Capital Territory (FCT) received a boost with the assurance from the Malam Muhammad Musa Bello-led FCT Administration (FCTA) that adequate attention will be given to sports in view of its significance in the socio-economic development of the Territory. The FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, alongside the Minister of State, FCT, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, FCT Permanent Secretary, Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa, and other top officials of FCTA gave the assurance when he received the Edo 2020 National Sports Festival Unity Torch in his office last week.

Malam Bello commended the partnership between FCTA and Federal Ministry of Sports towards resuscitating the National Sports Festival, adding that the games will provide a common rallying point for all Nigerians. He said: "As we flag off the journey of this beautiful Torch of Unity for the Unity Games, we hope that God Almighty will see this torch go through all the 36 States and culminate in Benin, the sports city." Also speaking, Dr. Aliyu said the Administration is set to provide the needed funds for the Edo 2020 games.

"I want to tell you today in clear terms that FCTA is preparing for these games more than ever before. We have learned from past experience, especially during last year National Youth Games when the Director of Sports was running up and down for funds. It will not happen this time around. The Administration is ready to release funds when the need arises. As we speak, we have agreed to renovate and upgrade all the six stadia in FCT to ensure the growth and development of football in the capital city," she stated.

The FCT Director of Sports, Mrs. Dilichukwu Onyedinma, who earlier received the Unity Torch from the Sports Ministry officials at the Abuja City Gate before presenting it to the FCTA leadership, said the FCT is ready to improve on its past performances at the National Sports Festival. Onyedinma said: "It gladdens my heart that today we are receiving the 2020 National Sports Festival Unity Torch. Of course, the FCT slogan is 'Centre of Unity' and this torch has come to re-echo this national symbol. Sport is a unifying factor and over the years Nigeria and her people have benefited immensely from the joy, peace, and love that sport glows.

"We hosted the National Sports Festival two years ago and we broke many records including coming 7th in the overall medals table. "This year, we aim to move a step up the ladder. It is on this basis that I thank the Honourable Minister of the FCT Mohammed Bello, and FCT Minister of State, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu for their immense support. "Edo 2020 presents another opportunity for us and we are ready for the challenge. We will go and win." The 20th National Sports Festival tagged Edo 2020' is scheduled to run from Friday, March 20 to Friday, April 3, 2020.
