FCT karate team places third in National Open Championships

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) karate team fought hard, but emerged third in the just concluded karate tournament held in Keffi, Nasarawa State, on 19 June this year. The competition, the 2nd Nasarawa National Open Championships (Junior/Senior) saw participants from the 36 states of the country.

The contests were in Kata (demonstration) and Kumite (fight) categories. At the end of hostilities, FCT won a total of 15 medals comprising 3 gold, 5 silver and 7 bronze.

In a related development, in the Association of Badminton Clubs in Nigeria under-16 tournament in Kaduna, FCT smiled home with gold in the boys' singles and gold in boys' doubles. In girls' singles, FCT won 1 silver and 1 bronze. Team FCT competed against Kano and Niger States during the tournament.

The involvement of women in sports in Nigeria in some quarters, particularly in northern Nigeria, is something that is viewed as rather unacceptable but a different ball game in other parts of the country.
