FCT Minister visits IGP, calls for deployment of more personnel

Sept, 2021 | By Anthony Ogunleye | ||

Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, has called for the deployment of more police personnel to the Territory. The Minister made the appeal when he paid a courtesy and appreciation visit to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, at Force Headquarters in Abuja. Accompanied by some senior members of staff of FCT Administration (FCTA), the Minister said that the city of Abuja had expanded over the years and with it, the population and inevitably an increase in crime and criminality.

While thanking the Police Force for the near elimination of the 'one chance' crime which hitherto was synonymous with FCT, he asked for deployment of more personnel and equipment such as vehicles and advanced crowd control equipment. He also informed the IGP that FCT has keyed into the community policing policy of government and has profiled able-bodied men and women suitable for the task of community policing. He, however, called for an increase in the number of volunteers allotted to FCT.

Thanking the IGP also for the creation of a Police Division at Tungan Maje, an FCT community contiguous to Niger State, he decried a noticeable trend where non-residents of FCT will come into the city for public demonstrations and in the process, disrupt the peace of the city, mainly for publicity purposes. According to the Minister, FCT residents are peaceful, law abiding citizens, saying there is the need to protect them and their means of livelihood.

Malam Bello also informed the IGP that the various Commissioners of Police posted to FCT have been the main drivers of the FCT Security Committee and pledged FCTA's continuous support to the Nigerian Police Force. Responding, the IGP extended his appreciation to FCTA for the support it has given to FCT Police Command over the years and promised the provision of needed equipment to the Command to enhance the fight against crime and criminality in the Territory.

The IGP also informed the Minister that the Police Force was ready to train the community policing volunteers from FCT at the Administration's expense and also called for synergy between the Minister and governors of states with boundaries to FCT for effective tackling of crimes that cut across the states. Present at the courtesy visit were the Permanent Secretary, FCTA, Mr Olusade Adesola; Director, Human Resources Management, FCTA, Dr Bashir Mohammed; Director, Department of Security Services, Mr Adamu Gwary, amongst other officials of FCTA and the Nigeria Police Force.

News Update

Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed, disclosed these while speaking during the FMFBNP/AfDB SAPZ High-Level virtual discussions last week.

With the support of her principals, Dame Joy Okoro has gradually been solving the many issues that plagued FCT Water Board with the immediate noticeable result being that revenue has shot up apparently for the first time in a while.

In a recent interview with Abuja Digest Weekly's Sennen Udoh, Mr. Ekpenyong, was a journalist's delight to behold as he volunteered consultancy counseling on effective mentoring on education, moral upbringing, and sports/other talents.

The involvement of women in sports in Nigeria in some quarters, particularly in northern Nigeria, is something that is viewed as rather unacceptable but a different ball game in other parts of the country.
