FCT athletes, 6 states tussle in zonal elimination for Youth Games

Sep, 2021 | By Nkechi Isa | ||

The FCT Sports Department is participating in a four–day zonal elimination, which began 2 September, 2021, in Ilorin, Kwara State. It is scheduled to end on 7 September. The disclosure was made by the Head, Media and Communication Unit of the Department, Vivian Onubogu. Onubogu quoted Acting Director of FCT Sports Department, Luka Istifanus, as revealing that the zonal elimination is for athletes of team sports that are expected to participate at the National Youth Games billed for Ilorin 10-19 October, 2021.

During the elimination, athletes in team sports from seven states of the North Central zone are locking horns in football, basketball, volleyball, handball, cricket and hockey. From the elimination, winners are expected to emerge to represent the zone. Istifanus stated that in the last National Sports Festival, tagged Edo 2020, FCT qualified in team sports of football, handball and cricket.

''In other words, zonal elimination is all about hand picking the team sports that will participate in a tournament. This has become necessary because it has a larger population compared to other sports. For instance, if it is boxing, you can go with two boxers. When it comes to team sports, the players are larger in number, hence the need for zonal elimination. Football has 18 players, hockey 18, handball 16; you have 11 players competing at a time, then you also have the reserve.”

News Update

Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed, disclosed these while speaking during the FMFBNP/AfDB SAPZ High-Level virtual discussions last week.

With the support of her principals, Dame Joy Okoro has gradually been solving the many issues that plagued FCT Water Board with the immediate noticeable result being that revenue has shot up apparently for the first time in a while.

In a recent interview with Abuja Digest Weekly's Sennen Udoh, Mr. Ekpenyong, was a journalist's delight to behold as he volunteered consultancy counseling on effective mentoring on education, moral upbringing, and sports/other talents.

The involvement of women in sports in Nigeria in some quarters, particularly in northern Nigeria, is something that is viewed as rather unacceptable but a different ball game in other parts of the country.
