Insecurity: FCTA raises cttee to review vigilante operations

Sept, 2021 | By Wisdom Acka | ||

In order to strengthen security of lives and property in Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the FCT Administration (FCTA) has set up a committee to review volunteer security services in the Territory. Permanent Secretary, FCTA, Mr. Olusade Adesola, who inaugurated the committee in Abuja last week, stated that it was expedient to support alternative security options to augment conventional security services, hence the constituting of the committee to recommend establishment of standard operational procedure for all vigilante groups operating in the nation's capital.

Mr. Adesola, who was represented by the Director of Operations in the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Udoh Samuel Attang, charged members of the committee to bring out their professionalism and experience to bear in the national assignment, adding that the task of ensuring security for everyone was a collective one. The committee was given six terms of reference which include to carry out appraisal of existing structures and mode of operation of vigilante groups in Gwagwalada Area Council; determine suitability or otherwise of existing vigilante groups and the process for new structures and review the groups to reflect representation of all interest groups in the Council.

Others are, to fashion modalities on a new structure that the vigilante groups will operate under; to fashion modalities in the recruitment process of the groups and to make any other recommendation that would enhance functionality of the vigilante groups in FCT. The committee, which is chaired by the Nigeria Police Force Area Commander for Gwagwalada, ACP Nana B. Garba, has the Assistant Director, FCTA Department of Security Services, Mr. Sunday G. Olubiyi, as secretary.

Other members of the committee include representatives of Gwagwalada Area Council Chairman; the Aguma of Gwagwalada; Agora of Zuba; Imam; FCT CAN Chairman; Guards Brigade 176 Battalion; DPO, Gwagwalada; and the DSS. Others include the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps; FCTA's Area Council Services Secretariat; FCTA's Legal Services Secretariat; as well as representatives of Gbagi, Bassa and Miyetti Allah, among others.

In a welcome address earlier, Director of Administration and Finance in the Security Services department, Dr. Abdul-lateef Bello, changed members of the committee to consider it a privilege for national service and carry out the assignment to the best of their abilities for the benefit of FCT residents and all Nigerians.

News Update

Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed, disclosed these while speaking during the FMFBNP/AfDB SAPZ High-Level virtual discussions last week.

With the support of her principals, Dame Joy Okoro has gradually been solving the many issues that plagued FCT Water Board with the immediate noticeable result being that revenue has shot up apparently for the first time in a while.

In a recent interview with Abuja Digest Weekly's Sennen Udoh, Mr. Ekpenyong, was a journalist's delight to behold as he volunteered consultancy counseling on effective mentoring on education, moral upbringing, and sports/other talents.

The involvement of women in sports in Nigeria in some quarters, particularly in northern Nigeria, is something that is viewed as rather unacceptable but a different ball game in other parts of the country.
