Director of Sports congratulates SWAN on successful polls

Jul, 2021 | By Gyang Dakwo | ||

Acting Director of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Sports Department, Mr. Luka Istifanus, has congratulated the FCT chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) on the successful conduct of its elections. Comrade Bunmi Haruna emerged Chairman after the polling.

Istifanus said the successful conduct of the elections showed the capability of the association to conduct its affairs in an orderly and mature manner as obtains in all respectable professional bodies. In a congratulatory message to SWAN, he enjoined the new Executive Council (Exco) to work in partnership with relevant governmental and non-governmental bodies to ensure the uplifting of sports not only in the FCT but in Nigeria at large.

The Acting Director pointed out that members of the Exco, as representatives of all sports writers, must conduct themselves in a manner that is above board and should not hesitate to call the attention of sports administrators to issues that need to be addressed in the interest of sports. "The doors of the FCT Sports Department are always open as it is ever ready to partner with the association in bringing about meaningful development in sports in the FCT,'' he said.

Istifanus also implored the Exco to provide purposeful leadership by extending a hand of friendship to all interest groups in the association, urging them to resist divisive acts that will undermine sports development even as he charged them to rather put heads together for a fruitful tenure. Meanwhile, the Bunmi Haruna-led Exco paid a courtesy visit to Mr. Istifanus.

During the visit, the sports writers' body pledged their unflinching support and commitment to cover and project all activities of FCT Sports Department. Journalists from different media houses were in the entourage. Addressing them, the Acting Director affirmed that he has been making concerted efforts to ensure smooth partnership with sports councilors in the six Areas Councils of FCT. He expressed delight over the election of the new Exco, saying "I do not have a single doubt that SWAN will help the FCT Sports Department to do its job better."

News Update

Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed, disclosed these while speaking during the FMFBNP/AfDB SAPZ High-Level virtual discussions last week.

With the support of her principals, Dame Joy Okoro has gradually been solving the many issues that plagued FCT Water Board with the immediate noticeable result being that revenue has shot up apparently for the first time in a while.

In a recent interview with Abuja Digest Weekly's Sennen Udoh, Mr. Ekpenyong, was a journalist's delight to behold as he volunteered consultancy counseling on effective mentoring on education, moral upbringing, and sports/other talents.

The involvement of women in sports in Nigeria in some quarters, particularly in northern Nigeria, is something that is viewed as rather unacceptable but a different ball game in other parts of the country.
