The Federal Capital Territory Administration has enjoined staff of the public health department to get screened for cancer to ensure early detection and prompt treatment.
Head of Disease Control, FCT- Public Health Department, Dr. Ngozi Ebisike, made the call during the sensitization session on breast and cervical cancer at the Public Health Department Office, Area 3, Garki I District, Abuja.
Accordingly, the session was aimed to raise awareness and encourage proactive health measures among healthcare workers.
Ebisike emphasized the importance of self-care among healthcare workers and public health administrators.
She noted that while they dedicate their lives to caring for others, they often neglect their health.
Ebisike urged participants to be conscious of their bodies and pay attention to any changes.
Meanwhile, the head of the Non-Communicable Disease Unit, Dr. Adeyemi Olubumi provided an in-depth explanation of breast and cervical cancer.
She conducted a practical demonstration of self-breast examination and stressed the importance of regular check-ups.
Adeyemi encouraged all attendees to not only perform self-examinations but also undergo clinical screenings, as early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes.
While announcing that cancer screening is currently on-going at Wuse District Hospital and will continue until the end of February, she urged Staff members to take advantage of the opportunity for early detection and prevention.
A solemn moment was observed as a minute of silence was observed in honour of a late staff member who lost the battle to cancer.
The sensitization exercise was part of activities commemorating World Cancer Day, reinforcing the department’s commitment to promoting cancer awareness and prevention among healthcare workers.
