Nigeria’s Super Eagles are set for a showdown against arch-rivals Ghana’s Black Stars in the semi-finals of the “Unity Cup 2025”, with the West African giants clashing on May 28 in London. The match marks a chance for redemption for Nigeria, who suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat the last time both teams met on English soil.
Organized by AfroSport, the tournament brings together four teams—Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago—in what has been billed as “The Best in the West – the Afro Classico Contest.”
“I am proud to announce that The Unity Cup is back,” said Rotimi Pedro of AfroSport, the event organizers. “It has been a long road to revive this important community event, and we are happy that fans of African and Caribbean football will get to see international football of the highest caliber at The Unity Cup 2025.”
Though Nigeria enter as favorites—boasting a higher FIFA ranking and two previous Unity Cup wins—Ghana’s history of delivering upsets ensures nothing is guaranteed. Meanwhile, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago will battle in the other semi-final (May 27) to determine the best Caribbean side.
Andy Howes, Co-Director of AfroSport, emphasized the tournament’s broader significance.
“The Unity Cup is a tournament that really does evoke the often-used phrase ‘an event that goes beyond sport.’ With the array of elite stars and the profile of the teams involved, this event is not only important culturally but also reflects the growing commercial importance of African and Caribbean football, as well as the rising influence of black football fans in England.”
The winners advance to the May 31 final, while the losing semi-finalists compete for bronze.
For Nigeria’s Super Eagles, it’s more than just a trophy—it’s about pride, bragging rights, and vengeance.
