As excitement builds up for the 22nd National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Team FCT has expressed confidence in its ability to shine and secure medals that will place the Federal Capital Territory on Nigeria’s sporting map.

Backed by full support from the FCT Administration, the team is heading into the festival with high morale and a strong sense of purpose. The Administration has equipped the Sports Department with everything needed for success, encouraging the team to give its best and bring honour to the nation’s capital.

Speaking with Abuja Digest at the athletes’ camp on the eve of their departure, FCT Director of Sports, Luka Istifanus, shared his optimism about the team’s chances.

“We are charged and set to deliver a wonderful performance. The recent awards given by the FCT Minister to medal winners, including those dating back to 2022, have truly put the team in a winning mindset,” he said.

Istifanus also highlighted that the FCT continues to stand out at national competitions by relying on homegrown talent.

Deputy Director of Sports Development, Iyiola Ogundele, echoed this enthusiasm, revealing that Team FCT will compete in twenty-seven sports at the “Gateway Games.” He said the goal is to surpass previous records and showcase the depth of talent in the territory.

Ogundele emphasized that sports development remains central to Team FCT’s mission. Following an outstanding performance at the last National Youth Games in Asaba, several young athletes from the FCT will now compete in Abeokuta as part of the “International Junior Athletes.” These rising stars will gain valuable experience competing alongside elite athletes and are also being groomed to represent Nigeria in international championships.

Head Coach of FCT Badminton, Jones Adakole, added that the territory has long been a powerhouse in the sport. He recalled how FCT made history by winning all seven badminton gold medals at the 2005 National Sports Festival. He added that the team also swept all five gold medals at the 2024 National Youth Games.

Adakole said eight of those youth champions, known as “the Invincibles,” will now represent FCT in Abeokuta, bringing a fearless and determined spirit to the competition.

The opening ceremony of the National Sports Festival is scheduled for Sunday, 18 May, as Team FCT looks forward to making its mark.
