WACP PAEDIARICS ACCREDITATION TEAM COMMENDS NEONATAL FACILITIES IN WUSE AND KARSHI HOSPITALS

The Accreditation Team from the West African College of Physicians (Faculty of Paediatrics), has commended Wuse and Karshi hospitals for its well-equipped neonatal ward, among other obsersavations.
The Director-General of the Hospital Management Board (HMB), Dr. Olugbenga Bello, while receiving the accreditation team appreciated their feedback, assuring them that the Board would address the observations and recommendations within its capacity.
He emphasized the Board’s commitment to strengthening the paediatric training environment and elevating service delivery standards across all HMB-managed facilities.
The accreditation team led by Professor Olufemi Ogunrinde, during an official visit assessed the readiness of four Secondary Healthcare Facilities (SHFs) for postgraduate paediatric training.
The hospitals assessed included Asokoro District Hospital, Maitama District Hospital, Wuse District Hospital, and Karshi General Hospital.
In attendance were senior management staff of both the Hospital Management Board and the respective hospitals. The team conducted a comprehensive assessment of the neonatal wards, paediatric units, staff strength, training facilities, and general infrastructure.
The visiting team expressed satisfaction with the state of preparedness across the facilities, and particularly commended Wuse District Hospital for its well-equipped neonatal ward and Karshi General Hospital, noting that although categorized as rural, its infrastructure and service delivery exceeded expectations.
Speaking during the visit, Prof. Ogunrinde remarked, “Neonatal care should never be an afterthought,” stressing the importance of structured paediatric training at the secondary healthcare level. The Accreditation Team concluded the visit by stating they would compile and submit a formal report to the College, after which a final decision would be made regarding the accreditation status of the hospitals
