The FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD) is to collaborate with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria COREN on engineering systems to enhance disaster management in the FCT.
The Acting Director General of FEMD, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed made the call during a courtesy visit to Professor Okorie Uche, the Registrar of COREN, in Abuja.
Engr. Abdulrahman explained that the engineering system is failing, and when it fails, it causes disasters, particularly on our roads.
He attributed the rising incidents of petrol tanker accidents to the practice of carrying above the approved capacity and the absence of weigh-in bridges on our roads.
“COREN must police the system to make our work easier. We must collaborate on rules and regulations to ensure the system is sanitized.
Lane crashes, refinery collapses, or dam failures are major engineering system failures, and when they fail, they cause disasters. We need you to put us in your regulations, particularly the ERM, to enhance emergency Preparedness and management”. He said.
Responding, Registrar COREN, Prof. Okorie Uche, assured that Council will collaborate with FEMD technically to ensure public health safety and the environment.
“We need to check a lot of things for public safety. In the 21st century, we should not be having petrol tanker explosions, which means we did not study the safety lines”. He said
Meanwhile, as part of its commitment to mitigating the impact of disasters in the FCT, FEMD has expressed its readiness to partner with the Association of Ex-Junior Airmen (Ex-JAM).
FEMD Ag DG stated this when he received the Abuja branch of the association, led by its Vice President, Michael Musa, in his office.
Engr Abdulrahman noted that members of Ex JAM were trained military civilians under the Air Force and could therefore complement the activities of FEMD as volunteers and vanguards.
” As disaster mangers, we are looking for people like you who have been trained; to assist us mitigate the impact of disasters in the FCT. We have avenues through which you can help us as volunteers and vanguards” he said.
Earlier, Musa said members of the association were in FEMD to express their appreciation for support for its activities and also to solicit for collaboration in areas of disaster management.
