The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service celebrated its 23rd anniversary on Tuesday, 4th November,2025, with a mix of gratitude and urgent appeals for modernization and expansion to match the Territory’s rapid growth.

At a press conference held at the Service Conference Hall, Controller, Engr. Adebayo Amiola Zacchaeus, praised the dedication of officers -both serving and retired, while honouring those who lost their lives in the line of duty, saying, “Their sacrifice remains our inspiration.”

Zacchaeus highlighted critical challenges, including an overstretched fleet of firefighting trucks, many of which are operating far beyond their optimal lifespan.

The Controller added that another pressing issue is that of manpower shortage.

“With Abuja expanding into new districts like Guzape, Mpape, and Karshi, every district deserves prompt emergency response, but several areas remain uncovered,” he noted.

With the dry season approaching, Zacchaeus warned FCT residents of the possibility of increased fire risks due to high temperatures, dry vegetation, and increased human activities such as bush burning.

He, however, announced that the Service has intensified fire prevention campaigns across communities, even as he urged residents to avoid open fires and improper handling of electrical appliances.

While commending the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, for infrastructural projects like the Kaura District access roads, which will improve emergency response, Zacchaeus appealed for more funding.

“The cost of diesel alone runs into millions monthly, not to mention maintaining our aging fleet,” he decried, calling for speedy completion of fire stations in Utako, Mbora, and Gaduwa for enhanced coverage.

The Controller emphasized that the FCT Fire Service is more than firefighters, it includes engineers, architects, paramedics, and legal experts working collectively to safeguard the capital. “We are a hub of technical and strategic expertise,” he stated.

Zacchaeus thanked the media for amplifying safety awareness and concluded with a prayer and a promise: “We are proud of our journey but determined to serve even better.”
