FCT School Sports Festival: A Vehicle For Human Development- Director

Sports in the FCT is heading for a positive turnaround with the revival of the FCT School Sports Festival.

The games which is organized by the FCT Education Secretariat has been identified as an avenue for not only discovering and building a crop of successful sporting generation, but also for the psychological development of the children.

In a chat with Abuja Digest, Director School Sports, Hashimu Adamu, said having such an event in the FCT is of enormous benefit to the school children as it help relieve the monotony of classroom work and also gives the opportunity to meet and make friends with children from other schools.

The school Sports Festival he said will serve as a preparation for the National Youth Games and also as a reservoir of talent from which the FCT Sports Department can nurture and use during competitions.

He lauded the Wike-led FCT Administration for provideng the support that enabled the games which last held Twenty-five years ago to hold this year.

Adamu further made a call for support in form of sponsorship and collaboration with individuals and organizations to enable the games hold regularly in view of its benefit to the society.

For the parents and guardians, the Director solicited their support by way of encouraging their children and wards to participate in sporting activities. This he said will keep them engaged and away from negative activities as well as providing a means of livelihood for those who choose to pursue careers in sports.

The festival which is broadly divided into three categories – Primary Schools (13 and Under), Juniors Secondary (15 and Under), and Senior Secondary (17 and Under) began on Thursday with track and field events while ball activities are currently going on at the various centers.

Preliminary stage of the games will last until March 2, while the closing stage is slated for 11-14 March 2024.
