The Federal Capital Territory ( FCT), Police Command has recovered a total of 125 manholes stolen by criminals within a week.
In a statement made available to Newsmen in Abuja, the Command reaffirmed its continued efforts to combat the theft of critical government infrastructure and ensure the safety and security of public utilities in the nation’s capital.
The statement also disclosed that the latest recovery was made on February 4, 2025, following intelligence-led operations in the Dei-Dei area, where officers found the stolen manhole covers hidden in a pit; adding that the success of the operation is credited to a tip-off from a vigilant informant.
“This operation follows a breakthrough last week, when the Command, in collaboration with the Joint Task Force constituted by the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike successfully intercepted and recovered vandalized public infrastructure,” the statement said.
It further stated that the FCT Police Commissioner, Mr. Tunde Disu, made it clear that such criminal activities will not be tolerated, and that those found guilty of stealing or trafficking public assets will face severe legal consequences.
The Commissioner urged individuals engaged in these unlawful activities to desist immediately; stressing that their actions not only undermine public safety but also hinder the development and functionality of vital infrastructure within the FCT.
“We will not relent in our search for stolen public assets. Our operatives are intensifying efforts to locate and dismantle illegal warehouses and storage sites where vandals may be stockpiling stolen infrastructures,” he stressed.
Disu commended residents for their continued support; acknowledging and appreciating the ongoing support and cooperation from the local community.
While encouraging vigilance, he advised residents to stay watchful and alert to prevent any further vandalism or crime.
Disu emphasized that protecting public assets is a shared responsibility; insisting that protecting public infrastructure is a collective duty that involves everyone in the community.
The FCT Police Command enjoined residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities or individuals in their neighborhoods to the Police.
The Command emphasized that timely reporting can significantly help in tackling criminal activities and protecting public infrastructure.
