The FCT Education Resource Centre (ERC), in its sustained advocacy for staff well-being and improved workplace productivity, has concluded the third edition of its Annual Sports Competition with a series of activities that ended in a colourful road walk.
Speaking during the annual competition and award ceremony, the Permanent Secretary, Education Secretariat, Mrs. Joy Okeke, described such activities as vital to staff welfare and institutional cohesion. She commended the ERC for sustaining the initiative over the years, noting that when staff are healthy and united, service delivery becomes more impactful.
In her opening remarks, the Director, ERC, Dr. Neemat Daud Abdulrahim, said the competition has evolved into a strategic staff engagement programme designed to enhance physical fitness and mental well-being. She stated that it strengthens team spirit, fosters social bonding across divisions, boosts motivation, and promotes a healthier work–life balance through healthy competition.
Dr. Abdulrahim explained that the Centre recognizes its leadership heritage, thus naming the annual competition after former directors of the Centre’s learning hub. This, she said, is intended to honour history while inspiring staff to continue upholding excellence.
She added that the Centre will continue to introduce innovative and sustainable programmes that enhance professionalism and productivity. She also announced a new award category, the Most Valuable Athlete, to encourage participation.
In their separate remarks, former Director of the Centre, Dr. Emmanuel Aina, and the Director of School Sports, Education Secretariat, Mr. Adamu Hashimu, expressed delight in the continuity of the legacy. They noted that sports instill discipline, teamwork, and leadership skills, which are essential in the workplace. Both commended the ERC for its unity and enthusiasm.
The road walk commenced from the ERC premises and proceeded through major routes within Zone 7, Wuse, drawing applause from residents and passersby. Staff displayed vibrant energy and enthusiasm throughout the exercise. The walk was followed by aerobics, warm-down sessions, and refreshments.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of awards to winners: Ismaila Tsiga House emerged in 1st position, Rebecca Alu Uganden House took 2nd place, and Emmanuel Aina House came 3rd. Other winners include Funke Olorunlona House, which placed 4th, while Ramatu Awwal-Ibrahim House finished 5th.
The colourful event, introduced to boost workplace morale, enhance social cohesion, and increase productivity, was well attended by senior officials across the FCT. Kellogg’s, makers of Cornflakes, also supported the event by refreshing staff and reinforcing the Centre’s commitment to staff welfare and organizational excellence.
