FCTA MASS EDUCATION DEPARTMENT TAKES LITERACY TO THE WASA COMMUNITY.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), through its Department of Mass Education (DME), joined the rest of the world to commemorate the 2025 International Literacy Day at Wasa Community, Apo District, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) Zone with the global theme of ‘Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era.
In her keynote address, the Director of the Department of Mass Education, Dr. (Mrs.) Favour Edem-Nse, stressed that literacy today goes beyond reading and writing, extending into the ability to navigate, understand, and utilize digital information effectively.
She stated that literacy is both a fundamental human right and a driver of economic growth, social mobility, and national development.
She highlights the importance of digital literacy, which equips individuals to evaluate sources, harness technology, and seize opportunities, thereby unlocking their potential and contributing to societal progress.
Dr Edem-Nse called on everyone to come together to ensure empowerment of the citizens, particularly the most marginalized, with the literacy skills they need to succeed in the 21st century, adding that a more inclusive, informed, and prosperous society can be built.
She further reiterated the Department’s commitment not only to expanding access to literacy across all the Area Councils of the FCT, but remains resolute in its mission to drastically reduce illiteracy levels while empowering residents to leverage education for personal advancement, sustainable livelihood, and National growth.
She added that the Administration will continue to invest in innovative programmes that close the gap between traditional learning and digital skills acquisition
The colourful event featured a spelling bee competition, sensitization on the Department’s programmes, and a practical session on digital marketing.
The highlight of the event was the official commissioning of Literacy/ Women Programme Centre, a hub designed to promote literacy, empower women as well as equip residents with digital and entrepreneurial skills .
The event was well attended by Directors from the Education Secretariat, development partners, community leaders, learners, and Other Stakeholders.
