To ensure quality service delivery to the residents of the Federal Capital Territory, the Coordinator of Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, (AMMC), Chief Felix Amechi Obuah, has charged the management and staff of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), to rededicate their commitment to duty.

The newly appointed Coordinator, also urged the staff to discharge their respnsibilities prefonssionally in accordance with the rule and regulations governing Civil Service.

Obuah gave the charge while addressing the staff of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board, during a familiarization visit to the headquarters of the Board, being the supervisory body of the AEPB on Thursday.

Obuah said he has come to add value to the existing structure and to ensure that the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as it affects the environment in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), is given the required impetus.

He said the success of the present FCT Administration under the leadership of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, would also be measured based on the the acre given to environment due to the fundamental role it plays in the lives of residents.

According to him, AEPB must work round the clock in ensuring that the Abuja residents enjoy clean air, free environment devoid of negative environmental impact like pollution and environmental induced health hazards including epidemics.

He emphasized that the supervisory role he has come to carry out in the Board will not be to witch hunt anybody, rather to enhance and complement each other to achieve the vision of the FCT Minister.

His words: “My short stint here is not to witch hunt anyone but to carry all who are willing to add value along. We must be ready to learn and complement one another’s role on the line of duty to see that the Federal Capital City competes favourably in terms of clean environment with other first class cities of Africa and the rest of the World. So, each of us must play his or her role towards achieving this vision.”

The Coordinator, however, frowned at the roaming and grazing of cattle by herders in the City Centre of Abuja, saying it is not only wrong but also portrays Nigeria in bad light.

Obuah added: “this is the 21st century and cattle are kept in ranches away from the residential areas. Angola that has the largest population of cattle in Africa keep them in ranches not in the streets. We must do same. These livestock defecate along as they graze thereby defacing our roads and making everywhere on their track irritating. We must learn to do things right if we aim at advancing like the rest of the World.”

Obuah enjoined the management of AEPB to implement the Act that prohibits the grazing of cattle in the city by confiscating these animals and prosecuting the offenders.

“If we cannot control this set of people, it means we will be seen as a nation that is not serious by the international communities. We cannot afford to fail in this duty. So, you must implement the Act, but first of all, send messages through the media to that effect,” he said.
