As the United States of America celebrates her 248 year independence anniversary, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the United States of America Embassy in Nigeria have undertaken a tree planting project in Abuja.

Accordingly, the collaborative effort is to ensure sustainability in greening the FCT Environment.

The Mandate Secretary, FCT Health and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, who participated in the flag-off of the tree planting campaign, said the project is in commemoration of the two hundred and forty eight (248) years of the United States of America independence.

Fasawe announced that the FCT Adminitration has decided to get youths to take over the fight against global warming and climate change with the formation of Environmental Champions from various schools in the FCT with each student having a tree planted and nurtured.

Her words: “In this vien, the FCT Administration will encourage the students with incentives to ensure that the trees are continuously nurtured.”

She reiterated that no effort would be spared in driving the greening revolution in Abuja to reduce the impact of Climate Change.

While congratulating the United States of America on her 248 years of independence with the purest form of democracy, the Mandate Secretary appreciated the US Embassy for the collaboration and partnership, which will leave a lasting legacy.

Speaking at the occasion, the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, said that the occasion coincided with his first one hundred days as US Ambassador to Nigeria.

He added that the US marked its 248 years of independence today, and it is an honour that the US government collaborates with the FCT to plant 248 trees along the Independence Avenue of the Federal Capital City.

The US Ambassador thanked the FCT Minister for his support and making the occasion a reality.

He reiterated that the 248 trees planted symbolized the 248 years of the United States independence, with each tree representing their shared commitment towards protecting the environment..
