FCTA MARKS WORLD DIABETES DAY 2025 WITH AWARENESS WALK AND WORKPLACE OUTREACH

As part of efforts to encourage the residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to be better informed and to take preventative measures on diabetes, the Health Service and Environment Secretariat, the Public Health Department, embarked on the 2025 Diabetes walk.
Speaking during the walk, on Saturday, November 15, 2025, the Head of Disease Control, FCT Public Health Department, Dr Ngozi Ebesiki, stated that the Diabetes health walk is part of the lined-up activities commemorating 2025 Diabetes Day, ensuring that residents take charge of their health.
Dr Ngozi emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, and check-ups to prevent diabetes. She stated that diabetes is a preventable disease and encouraged residents to take charge of their health. During World Diabetes Day 2025 walk, she highlighted the need for awareness and action to combat the rising cases of diabetes, especially in light of the increasing costs of diabetes treatment and medication, which have become a significant burden for many patients.
Also, the FCT Non-communicable disease Head, Dr Olubunmi Adeyemi, explained that the Diabetes walk is a way of reaching out to the general public in order for them to take priority on their health and also visit the hospital for proper checks.
Dr Olubunmi said it is important to maintaining a balanced diet, reduce calorie intake, stay physically active, get adequate rest, and maintain a healthy weight are essential steps in preventing diabetes. She added that Small, consistent lifestyle changes can help prevent diabetes, particularly Type 2 diabetes.
Earlier in the week, the team visited the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) as one of the selected workplaces to screen and sensitize people.
A comprehensive health talk on diabetes was delivered by Consultant Family Physician Dr Omolola Abegunde, covering essential information on prevention and management.
Thus, the FCCPC Vice Chairman, Tunji Bello, praised the initiative, emphasizing the importance of workplace health programs for staff well-being and productivity.
Bello further said there is a need for more collaboration to ensure more staff members undergo screening and testing, promoting a healthy lifestyle.
The department set up a screening site at the Utako market for continuous screening of blood pressure, sugar checks, free distribution of deworming tablets, among other services.
