As part of efforts to promote press freedom, the Chairperson, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Federal Capital Territory Administration (NUJ-FCTA) Chapel, Ngozi Ufomba, has charged Journalists to uphold the tenets of the profession in the discharge of their duties.
Ufomba gave the charge in a press release in commemoration of the 2024 World Press Freedom Day, signed by the Secretary NUJ-FCTA Chapel, Niyi Lawal, in Abuja, Friday.
According to the statement, the NUJ-FCTA Chair noted that every Information Officer and Journalists is to apply the tenets of the journalism profession in the discharge of their duties, especially through truth, accuracy, and objectivity of every information being disseminated for public consumption.
She reiterated that observing the Press Freedom Day was an opportunity to remind the government at all levels to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression of the journalists and information managers.
The Chairperson, while extending her warm regards to Information Officers and Journalists on this special day, also enjoined them to promote the activities of the FCT Administration across the various Secretariats, Departments, and Agencies.
The statement noted that the theme for the 2024 World Press Freedom Day, which is “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis”, seeks to promote narratives and ideas that will reduce the impact of ‘Climate Change’.
“To this end, the FCTA recently encouraged tree planting across the Territory, a gesture worth being publicized widely,” the statement read.
She commended the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and the FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmud, for the duo’s efforts in giving FCT a new face now, especially in the environmental sector as the theme for the 2024 World Press Freedom Day advocates.
