AFCON 2025: CAF CRACKS DOWN ON LASERS AND ALCOHOL IN NEW STADIUM SAFETY RULES
By: Gyang Dakwo
In preparation for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, a comprehensive set of safety rules has been announced by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Local Organising Committee. Particular focus is placed on two major concerns from past events, with laser pointers and alcohol being completely forbidden inside all stadiums in Morocco.
This decisive action against laser devices is driven by repeated and dangerous incidents that were witnessed in previous AFCON tournaments. Players were deliberately targeted with high-intensity green lasers during high-profile matches, a tactic that can cause temporary blindness and disorientation. To protect both the integrity of play and the physical safety of the athletes, this zero-tolerance measure has been firmly established by CAF.
Alongside this, a total prohibition on alcohol has been firmly rooted in the host nation’s regulations. The sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages are banned within all host stadiums and their immediate surrounding areas, a policy aligned with Moroccan law and cultural norms. Entry will be denied to fans found attempting to bring in alcohol, and a family-friendly atmosphere that respects local customs is aimed to be ensured.
Security considerations have been further extended to items that pose a direct physical threat. An absolute ban on weapons, sharp objects, and any form of pyrotechnics such as flares or fireworks has been instituted for this reason while flammable materials are also outlawed.
The risk posed by flying objects is another key concern and to prevent this, standard bottles, cans, and glass containers of any kind are not permitted to be brought in, while small, clear, empty plastic bottles for water may be allowed at some venues.
Regarding personal belongings, large bags and oversized backpacks are prohibited for the comfort and safety of all attendees. Only small personal bags that can be easily inspected are encouraged to be brought by fans to mandatory security checkpoints.
Also while national pride is encouraged, its expression must not disrupt the experience of others. Consequently, flags and banners that exceed typical dimensions of two meters are banned to ensure clear sightlines for every spectator in the stands.
The famous, pulsating sound of African stadiums may also be moderated. Musical instruments and loud noise-makers like vuvuzelas are subject to restriction at various venues, with an enjoyable environment for a diverse audience being prioritized.
Additional rules have also been brought in to protect commercial and broadcasting interests. Therefore, professional-grade cameras with detachable lenses and recording equipment beyond a standard mobile phone are not permitted inside the grounds. Drones are explicitly banned from all stadium airspace.
Animals too, except for officially certified service, are also forbidden from entry.
Finally, to uphold the spirit of unity and sportsmanship, prohibition of any material deemed divisive or offensive has also been put in place. This includes banners, signs, or clothing displaying political slogans, religious propaganda, discriminatory language, or unauthorized commercial advertising.
The Africa Cup of Nations 2025 will take place in Morocco from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026.
