Bayern Munich moved into control of their Champions League quarter final tie after a 2 to 1 win over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. The German side played with confidence and took their chances, while Madrid struggled for long periods and could not match the visitors’ intensity.
Luis Diaz gave Bayern the lead late in the first half and the goal reflected their dominance. Just moments after the restart, Harry Kane struck a fine goal to make it two, and that early second half blow put Bayern in a strong position. Madrid tried to respond but they were often denied by Manuel Neuer, who made several key saves to keep his side ahead.
However, Madrid found a way back when Kylian Mbappe scored from close range after a precise cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold. The goal lifted the home fans and gave Madrid hope, but Bayern stayed composed and saw out the game. They even had chances to extend their lead, although Diaz missed a clear opportunity on the break.
The result means Madrid must now chase the game in Munich if they want to keep their dream of a 16th European title alive.
In Lisbon, Arsenal left it late but secured a 1 to 0 win over Sporting CP in their first leg tie. The match was tight and chances were limited, but the visitors stayed patient and took their moment at the end.
Kai Havertz scored the winner after linking up with Gabriel Martinelli. He controlled a chipped pass and finished calmly into the corner, and the late goal gave Arsenal a valuable advantage ahead of the second leg in London.
The win was built on a strong performance from goalkeeper David Raya, who made several important saves. He pushed a powerful early shot onto the bar and later produced a quick double stop to deny Sporting just before the winning goal.
It was an important response for Arsenal after recent losses in domestic competitions, and it keeps their season on track. However, there was concern as captain Martin Odegaard went off injured in the second half.
The result also had wider impact as it confirmed that the Premier League will have five teams in next season’s UEFA Champions League. This comes through UEFA’s extra place system, which rewards leagues with strong performances across European competitions.
English clubs have performed well this season and that has secured the additional spot, strengthening the league’s presence in Europe once again.
