The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the European Union (EU) have disclosed plans to collaborate on a state-of-the-art waste management centre in Abuja, marking a significant step in urban development partnerships.

This is as the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, reaffirmed the FCT Administration’s commitment to strengthening ties with the EU during a visit by the EU Ambassador, on Thursday, 26 March, 2026 in Abuja.

The Minister praised the EU’s ongoing support for Nigeria, including the renovation of the FCT High Court, and emphasized the importance of the proposed waste management project.

“This partnership will prioritize sustainable urban development and improve living standards for Abuja residents,” Wike stated.

EU Head of Delegation, Ambassador Gautier Mignot, highlighted the bloc’s expanding role in the FCT, citing 19 operational embassies and recent collaborations in justice digitization, police support, and disability rights.

He also revealed the EU’s broader urban development agenda, which includes waste management, water systems, and infrastructure planning. “European expertise can help transform Abuja into a model city,” Mignot added.

As the meeting also addressed unresolved land allocation requests for 43 Nigerian staff of the EU delegation, some pending since 2007, Wike assured prompt action, noting ongoing efforts to reclaim illegally occupied diplomatic lands, including plots belonging to Switzerland and other European nations.

Other discussions also discussed include  rehabilitation of the IBB Golf Club, being handled by Julius Berger Nig PLC and invitations for the FCTA to explore investment opportunities with EU member states.
