The FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud has tasked Youth Corps Members to settle down to explore and add value to their various places of their primary assignments.

The Minister of State made this call Wednesday at the closing
ceremony of the 2024 Batch “A” stream 1 National Orientation Camp, in Kubwa, a suburb of Abuja.

Mahmoud charged the
corps members not to allow their certificates to limit them or hold them hostage;
rather, it should be a springboard with which they could explore and be of value
addition to themselves and their places of primary assignments.

She said that the time for the Corps members to use and deploy their innates
abilities to better themselves, their families and their environment is now; noting
that with their education and the training they acquired in the camp through the
Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurial Development (SAED) initiative, the World is
at their disposal to conquer and achieve whatever level of success they desire
without waiting for government employment opportunities that are not readily
available at the moment.

Her words: “The service year is a period for you to add value to yourselves by chatting the right
course, your certificates are not supposed to hold you hostage because higher
education is meant to expose you, deepen your horizon and horn your skills in order
to undertake any kind of assignment you encounter. Therefore, endeavor to
explore your potentials and navigate other areas other than your areas of strength
and comfort, you will marvel at the milestone achieved within a short space of time
if you genuinely push.”

The Minister of State, who was represented at the event by the Mandate Secretary, SDS and
Chairman FCT NYSC Governing Board, Ibrahim Aminu, emphasized the
Commitment of the FCT Administration to the welfare and the security of the Corps members
just like that of other residents of the Federal Capital Territory; adding that they
must avoid unnecessary travelling outside their places of primary assignment.

The Minister reiterated the rationale for the establishment of the
scheme which is to foster unity, integration and enhance national development,
thus, in realizing above national objectives, “you must develop an open mind as you
move into your host communities by discarding any perceived prejudices you
harbor about the and embrace reality”.

She assured that the FCT Administration will continue to lend its weight behind and
support the scheme as much as possible in order to achieve the established
mandate of the scheme.

Earlier in her remarks, the FCT NYSC Coordinator, Mrs. Winifred Shokpeka,
commended the FCT Minister and the FCT Minister of State, Barr.
Ezenwo Nyesom Wike and Dr. Mariya Mahmoud respectively, for the support the
scheme has continued to enjoy.

“Your efforts and timely responses toward the
success of every batch deployed to the FCT to serve is unprecedent and highly
appreciated,” she added.

According to her, the Corps members have been posted based on
their areas of discipline and specialization across the six (6) Area Councils of the FCT, which remains the posting policy of the NYSC and ensuring the lofty goals of the scheme
is achieved.

Mrs. Shokpeka used the occasion to appeal to employers of Corpers not to reject
Corps Members posted to them, they should ensure the judicious use of corps
posted to them and ensure their welfare are adequately catered for.
