In a bold step to deliver clean and safe water to satellite communities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCTA), the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike has officially flagged off the Lot 2 Karu Town and Environs Water Supply Project.

While flagging off the project on Thursday, 21st August, 2025, the FCT Minister said that the water supply project for satellite towns of the nation’s capital was a promise fulfilled.

He recalled that the President had pledged to deliver portable treated water to the residents of the FCT during the commissioning of the Greater Water Abuja Project, and said the project marked a significant milestone

His words: “I thank the people of Karu for coming out to support this flag-off program. Yesterday, we were in Bwari to flag off the provision of water supply in Saterlitte town. This is one of the promises made by Mr. President when he commissioned the Greater Water Abuja project two months ago in June. He said he was also going to provide water in the satellite towns, and we have started with Bwari and AMAC Area Councils”.

He also emphasised that the Kuje and Kwali water supply projects would commence by 2026, adding that before President Tinubu completes his first tenure, the Gwagwalada and Abaji water projects would also commence.

The Minister, therefore, pledged that by June 2026, clean and treated water would be available to the homes of Karu residents, ending their reliance on untreated borehole water.

Barr. Wike, while highlighting his Administration’s commitment to infrastructural development in the nation’s Capital, recalled that the 17-kilometre Karu-Karshi Road, once in a deplorable state, had already been reconstructed, easing movement in Karu town.

He also pledged that the FCT Administration will construct a 2km access road within the Karu site to ease mobility within the area.

The Minister therefore urged the Karu community to support the contractors to ensure completion in time for commissioning by the president for his third year in office.

He commended the AMAC Chairman for prioritising infrastructure delivery to his people, stressing that the provision of potable water was not just a government promise but “a fulfilled commitment and an investment in the future.”

Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, in a vote of thanks, said the project marked a new chapter of hope for the Karu residents.

She expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritising the development of rural communities through the Renewed Hope Agenda, noting: “This project exemplifies governance that listens and acts.”

The Minister also lauded the Minister of the FCT for his unwavering leadership and commitment to the welfare of residents.

Dr Mahmoud, therefore, called on host communities to take ownership of the project for sustainability.

Deputy Managing Director of CGC Nigeria Limited, Mr. Lui Hia Ming, hailed the project as “more than a water project but a people’s project,” assuring that the company would deliver quality and safe water to the people in line with the minister’s vision.

The Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Richard Dauda, while presenting an overview of the construction and expansion of the water supply project in Karu Satellite town, said it is a strategic infrastructural project in line with the FCT master plan to guarantee potable water access for FCT residents.

He said the project provides an essential secondary and tertiary distribution network for the distribution of potable water to the teeming population of Karu town and environs.

He said it is an extension of the Greater Water Abuja supply Project and is expected to be completed next year.

Abuja Digest reports that the water supply project, being executed by Messrs CGC Nigeria Limited, will extend potable water to Karu, Orozo, Jikwoyi, Kurudu and adjoining areas, covering about 194 kilometres of pipeline network.
