As part of ongoing efforts to promote proper hygiene practices in schools across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the FCT Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Directorate (RUWASSA), in collaboration with Rotary International District 9127, have carried out a sensitization campaign at Pilot Science Primary School, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.

Speaking during the event, the Acting Director of RUWASSA, Abigail Ekpenisi, encouraged pupils to develop the habit of regular handwashing, especially at critical times, as a key measure to prevent the spread of diseases within schools and the larger community. She stressed that maintaining good hand hygiene remains one of the most effective ways to stay healthy.

Ekpenisi also expressed appreciation to the District Governor of Rotary International District 9127 for her presence and support, including the donation of books and writing materials to the pupils.

In her goodwill message, the District Governor, Princess Dame Joy Okoro, urged the pupils to become positive change agents in their schools and communities.

She highlighted Rotary’s WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) programme, noting its commitment to improving access to safe water in schools.

According to her, access to clean water is still a challenge in some communities, and improving it helps keep children healthy and better prepared to learn.

The District Governor further encouraged the pupils to actively participate in their school health clubs to drive meaningful change.

Also speaking, the representative of the PTA Chairman, Mr. Atama Monday, commended the initiative and called on both staff and pupils to ensure that the hygiene campaign is sustained.

In her closing remarks, the Head Teacher, Mrs. Adama Musa, thanked RUWASSA and Rotary International for bringing the awareness programme to the school.

She urged everyone to maintain high standards of personal and environmental hygiene, emphasizing that a clean school environment is a shared responsibility.

The programme concluded with a practical demonstration of proper handwashing techniques by RUWASSA officials, with pupils actively participating.

Abuja Digest reports that FCT-RUWASSA continues to reaffirm its commitment to instilling good hygiene habits early in children, emphasizing that healthy children are the foundation of a healthy nation.
