The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), has warned parents compromising the dreams of children for their selfish interests to desist forthwith.
Mandate Secretary, FCTA Women Affairs Secretariat, Dr. Adedayo Benjamin-Laniyi, gave this warning while addressing stakeholders during a book launch of a 10 year old girl, Ashezi Akwashiki, Monday, in Abuja.
Benjamin-Laniyi said that in this 21st century, parents have significant role to play in guiding and counseling children to choose an appropriate career for themselves; frowning that many children have been misled out of selfish reasons, either by friends or parents, in choosing a life time career.
The Secretary, who was represented at the occasion by the Head of Adolescent Department of the Secretariat, Dr. Hauwa Aminu, stressed that parents must not compromise their children’s career for selfish reasons, but must prepare them uprightly ahead of time.
She said, to complement what the parents are doing in preparing children for better future, the government will continue to promote education among children by prioritizing a free education system.
Speaking earlier, the Director, Arts and Culture, FCTA, Olukayode Ayebisi, explained that if a child develops interest in doing anything positively, observe keenly, encourage and support the child in making his/her dreams a reality.
According to Ayebisi: “Do not force a child to do what he/she does not like to do. Never allow your personal interest to destroy a better future of a child. Allow a child to feel free to choose whatever he/she wants to become in life because you may not be alive as a parent to witness the mess you have put your child into, maybe out of selfish reasons.”
