The Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) of the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has empowered Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWD) in the Federal Capital Territory and across the nation.
The event, held on Wednesday, December 3, in Abuja, was organized to commemorate World Disability Day.
A total of 250 persons with various forms of disabilities benefited from the initiative, which is aimed at promoting inclusion and economic dignity for people living with disabilities in Nigeria.
The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who was represented by the wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, said the empowerment programme was designed to ensure that no one is left behind in national development, and that the dividends of democracy are enjoyed by all citizens regardless of their status in society.
Speaking at the event, the FCT Renewed Hope Initiative Coordinator and Mandate Secretary for Women Affairs, Honourable Dr. Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, noted that the empowerment programme aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen social protection and expand opportunities for vulnerable groups across the territory.
Dr. Benjamins-Laniyi added that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains sensitive to the plight of all citizens, particularly vulnerable groups in the FCT.
Beneficiaries who spoke with Abuja Digest expressed their joy and appreciation for the support received.
The Disability Desk Officer for the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, Madam Beatrice Mube, said the RHI has made significant efforts since its inception to ensure that PLWDs are empowered financially.
She noted that many persons with disabilities have become farmers and business owners as a result of the initiative.
According to her, “We are grateful, but we will continue to advocate for a safer and more inclusive environment that allows us to move freely in public spaces with minimal human assistance.”
She added that RHI remains committed to improving the well-being of persons with disabilities through the Renewed Hope Agenda of the current administration. She also urged developers and relevant stakeholders to ensure the provision of ramps in public buildings and other facilities to make life easier for persons with disabilities.
