Real Madrid and France football star Kylian Mbappe is in hospital in the United States after falling ill with a stomach condition known as acute gastroenteritis.

Real Madrid confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that the 25-year-old forward is undergoing medical tests and receiving treatment in a hospital. The club said Mbappe has “an acute case of gastroenteritis” and doctors are working to help him recover quickly.

As a result of his illness, Mbappe missed Real Madrid’s first match at the FIFA Club World Cup. The Spanish club drew 1-1 against Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia in their opening game, which took place on Wednesday in Miami, Florida.

Acute gastroenteritis is a sudden inflammation of the stomach and intestines. It can cause symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, and fever. In many cases, it is caused by a virus, bacteria, or contaminated food or water.

Mbappe, who recently joined Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain, is one of the most famous footballers in the world. He helped France win the 2018 FIFA World Cup and led them to the final again in 2022.
