The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) in the Federal Capital Territory (dubbed VIO) has concluded arrangements to induct the third batch of its ‘mayors’, the special volunteer arm of its operatives.

Accordingly, the institutionalization of the ‘Mayors’ is in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government to maximise gains of vehicle administration and traffic control in the nation’s capital.

The National Coordinator of Mayors/ who also doubles as FCT Squadron Leader, Dr. Yusuf John Suberu made this disclosure in his office at the Headquarters of the DRTS in Mabushi District, Abuja.

According to him, the ‘Mayors’ is volunteer group formed by the Conference of Directors of Vehicle Inspection Officers and Road Traffic Officers of Nigeria, made up of men and women of integrity, to reduce traffic mishap, save lives and property on our roads.

The National Coordinator said that it is the interest of the ‘Mayors’ to make huge contribution for the safety and peace of the country through maintenance of sanity on FCT roads and some other major cities across the country.

Suberu explained that the Group with branches in most states of the federation will continue to impact on the Nigerian road culture, which he observed had not been where it is supposed to be for now.

His words: “The ‘Mayors’ are special voluntary arm of the Directorate of Road Traffic Services; the Road Traffic Officers; the Vehicle Inspection Officers as they are known in different states of the federation. They are men of proven integrity saddled with the responsibility of assisting the Road Traffic officers in decongesting and control of traffic within FCT and some other major cities in the country.”
The Group, he said is always available in educating road users and providing road traffic advocacy all in a bid to make the roads nationwide safe for motorists, commuters, and other users; adding, “It is through this way that we contribute to the safety of life which is always the primary function of every government”.

Mayors, he said are equally into training and retraining of law enforcement officers and road users of the standard measures on road matters in a volunteered capacity.

Among the inductees, are some prominent serving and ex-serving members of the National Assembly and other respectable Nigerians, who have served the country at different levels.

Abuja Digest recalls that the second batch of 20 men and women of integrity were inducted in the last quarter of 2022, as another set of 35 that forms third batch will be inducted on the 30th of March, 2024 at the Directorate’s Headquarters.
