FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has flagged off construction of the Yangoji-Sukuku-Eba Road in Kwali, Kwali Area Council.

Performing the ceremony on Wednesday in Kwali, the Minister assured that President Bola Tinubu, in his Renewed Hope Agenda, would positively touch lives of residents at the grassroots.

Wike noted that Abuja was not only about the city centre but also about the Area Councils; saying that focusing only on the city, “allowing those at the grassroots to suffer” would be akin to what he termed: “governance means nothing.”

Wike, while appealling to Nigerians not to lose hope, stated that though there were challenges at the moment, he was confident that things would be better, even as he solicited their support for the President to succeed in his agenda to turn around things in the country for the better.

The Minister pledged to complete Kwali Township Stadium, which has been abandoned for many years; stressing, “On the township stadium, go and sleep….the period of abandoning projects is over”.

He revealed that he has identified at least 24 schools for refurbishing “and by the time we are done, you will know these are schools, because of the quality.

According to him, he would support any Council Chairman, who was determined to work for the people, irrespective of political party affiliations; emphasizing, “I don’t care where you belong to, all I care is to do what will better the lives of the people. We need to work together for governance.”

The Minister urged the Chairmen to stop rushing to the city but stay within their Councils and perform to make the people happy.

“Stay in your Councils and work for the people. Stop staying in town. Mine is to support you. You have every right to perform and the people will be happy. The FCT is not only in the city. If you don’t make this place well, you will create problems in the city,” Wike explained.

The Minister charged the contractor to relax and work well; saying that because his administration has built trust, contractors were going to sites without mobilization fee.

The Minister was at the occasion conferred with the traditional title of Kauran Kwali (undefeated war leader) by the Kwali community.

Kwali Area Council Chairman, Danladi Chiya, who spoke earlier thanked President Tinubu for approving the construction of three roads in each Council.

Chiya said that the gesture would compliment the efforts of the Kwali Area Council towards improving infrastructure for the benefit of the people.

Also speaking at the event, the Director, Satellite Towns Development Department, FCTA, Dr. Olusegun Olusa, explained that the project, awarded to Gilmor Engineering Nigeria Ltd, would be completed by May.

Meanwhile, the traditional leader of the area, Alhaji Abubakar Sani also thanked the President and Wike for their commitment to provide infrastructure in rural communities, particularly roads.

Sani said that road would make it easier for farmers to transport their farm produce to the towns and also improve security in the area.

He appealed that the gesture should be extended to primary healthcare centres to improve the quality of health services in rural areas.
