Arsenal have won their first European trophy in 18 years after beating defending champions Barcelona 1-0 in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final in Lisbon.

Renee Slegers’ team went into the match as underdogs. They started their European journey in the first round of qualifying after finishing fourth in the Women’s Super League. Along the way, they beat strong teams like Real Madrid and eight-time champions Lyon in the knockout stages, even though they were behind after the first legs in both ties.

In the final, Barcelona were the stronger side for most of the match. Arsenal had to be patient and defend well. They nearly took the lead when Barcelona’s Irene Paredes accidentally turned the ball into her own net. However, the goal was ruled out by VAR because Frida Maanum was offside in the build-up.

Even so, Arsenal created some good chances of their own. Frida Maanum came close to scoring just before half-time.

Barcelona kept pressing in the second half and looked more likely to score. But with only 15 minutes left, Arsenal brought on substitutes Stina Blackstenius and Beth Mead. Blackstenius made an instant impact, forcing a brilliant save from goalkeeper Cata Coll. Just moments later, she scored the winning goal after receiving a clever pass from Mead and placing her shot into the bottom corner of the net.

Barcelona fought hard to equalise in the final minutes, but Arsenal held firm. The final whistle confirmed a historic win for the London club, who lifted the UEFA Women’s Champions League trophy for the first time since 2007.

It was a proud moment for Arsenal and a remarkable achievement for a team that began this journey far from the spotlight.
